To make the child familiar with the names of the decimal categories (units, tens, hundreds and thousands) and with their relative proportions. To show that each decimal category is ten times the previous category. Perceptually, to introduce exponents as dimensions, showing units to be points, tens to be lines, hundreds to be squares, and thousands to be cubes; by having only one thousand, to suggest that the set of a point, line, square and cuve completes one whole cycle of the decimal hierarchy, the cube being the 'point' in the next higher cycle of the hierarchy.
